PFNA in nearby public wells
The same PFNA contamination traced to the Solvay plant in West Deptford was also found in public water wells serving Bellmawr, Brooklawn, and Gloucester City.
Camden City wells shut for PFAS
The City of Camden took some of its 18 wells out of service in 2024 because of PFAS and bought water from New Jersey American Water to cover the gap.

- Where it comes from
- Eighteen wells in the Lower Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer, serving the city west of the Cooper River (East Camden and Cramer Hill are on a different system).

- Chlorine, with monthly averages up to 1.40 ppm in the pipes.
- Hardness
- Not listed in the report. We measure it at your tap during the water test.
- PFAS
- Some city wells were taken out of service in 2024 because of PFAS. Results still ranged up to 12.9 ppt PFOS and 10.6 ppt PFOA, against federal limits of 4.0 ppt that take effect in 2029.
- Lead
- Lead at the 90th percentile was 0.93 ppb (2024).
Across the region
Acidic, iron-prone well water
This area sits on the sandy aquifers of the Coastal Plain. Water in the widely used Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer is naturally acidic, which can corrode pipes and leave blue-green stains, and some aquifers here carry a lot of iron. USGS testing also found radium above the federal limit in about a third of sampled Kirkwood-Cohansey wells in southern New Jersey.
PFAS limits
New Jersey was the first state to set limits for PFAS "forever chemicals": 14 parts per trillion for PFOA and 13 for PFOS and PFNA. Public utilities must meet them. Private wells are only tested when a home is sold or leased.
Hardness varies by town
New Jersey's median tap water is moderately hard, about 5 grains per gallon, and it changes a lot from one supplier to the next. Your water test tells you exactly where you stand.

Who supplies drinking water in Camden County?
It depends on the town: Camden is served by City of Camden Division of Utilities; Cherry Hill is served by New Jersey American Water (parts of town); Voorhees is served by New Jersey American Water; Haddonfield is served by New Jersey American Water. If your home has its own well pump and pressure tank, your well is your supply. We install in every town in Camden County, on either kind of water.
What should I test my well for in Camden County?
New Jersey's Private Well Testing Act requires a test before a home with a well is sold, and every five years for rentals; in Camden County it must include mercury. Wells here are among the state's most likely to fail for radioactivity (gross alpha). The local geology also makes acidic water, iron, and radium worth checking.
